Our Braunvieh

Back when we were dating, but at that point in our relationship where you begin to realize a long-term future is a real possibility, we often had conversations about what we wanted to do and where we wanted to end up. We both knew we wanted land and livestock. Susan had always wanted to raise Morgan horses, so we knew that was a given, but we needed to decide on a breed of cattle we wanted to raise. Susan had experience with Simmental, and Justin had some knowledge of Herefords...so, why Braunvieh?

Our personal interest in the Braunvieh breed began about 20 years ago. We were walking through the barns at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo admiring all the cattle while talking and dreaming about what we hoped to build one day, when we came across the Braunvieh stalls. There was just something about them. It is hard to look back and say if it was their build, their coloring, or what, but after returning home, we did some serious research into the breed and decided ultimately these were the cattle for us.

Braunvieh cattle are known for:

  • Moderate frame

  • More marbling and extra muscle

  • Efficiency in feed to weight conversion

  • Thrive in hot and cold climates

  • Cross with other breeds extremely well

  • Fertility and longevity

  • Maternal instincts

  • Sound udder and great milk production

  • Docile nature

So with Susan's knowledge and experience with cattle and Justin's somewhat lesser experience, but willingness to learn, we decided to put together a herd of our own.
