The Sunny Blue Ranch

Sunny Blue Ranch is a decades-long dream in the making. The road has been long and sometimes difficult. However, through dedication, perseverance, and a little bit of luck, we have been able to build on this dream. We have embarked on a path we hope will grow and expand into the future.

First, a little about us.

Susan was born and raised on a farm in Pratt, Kansas. She developed a love of horses early in life and spent most of her time riding horses that had been passed down to her by her grandfather. While he raised Arabians, he loved the Morgan breed and shared that passion with her. Her father, primarily a grain farmer producing corn, wheat, and soybeans, also ran a herd of feeder cattle every year. She would regularly assist him with any task these animals required, whether it be feeding, medicating, tagging, etc... When Susan was 9 years old, he let her buy two Simmental heifers and from there, helped her build a small herd, which she raised throughout high school and was able to sell before heading off to college.

Justin was born and raised in Arlington, Texas. Even though he grew up in the suburbs of Dallas/Fort Worth, he spent many summers helping his grandfather on his small farm in Ennis, Texas. There his grandfather raised a small herd of Herefords. Always eager to learn, he would assist his grandfather with anything that needed doing, be it checking cows, working them, or just hauling hay out of the field. Some of his fondest memories are of those summers.

We met in 2000 and were married in 2004. Since then, we have been blessed with three wonderful children, Samantha, Katelyn, and Calvin. They each do an excellent job assisting us as we build and grow our fledgling operation. It has been fun (and interesting) to watch them grow and learn about all the things that occur in farm life. We feel it makes them better and more prepared for the challenges and experiences life will send their way.

Sunny Blue Ranch officially started in 2019 with the purchase of two Braunvieh heifers. In 2020, we purchased a Morgan stallion to kick off our Morgan breeding program. It has been a slow build, but now that we have started, the herds are growing quickly. Check out our respective livestock pages to see what we have in the works.

Our name, Sunny Blue Ranch, means a lot to us. It embodies a combination of where we came from. "Sunny" represents the state flower of Kansas, the sunflower, a symbol of Susan's heritage. "Blue" is for the state flower of Texas, the bluebonnet, representing Justin's heritage. Remembering our origins is meaningful to both of us and helps drive us forward to build something for the future. We love what we are building and work hard every day to do what is best for the respective breeds while producing quality cattle and horses.
